Recommended Section Seeding Procedures
The MSHSSCA feels strongly that all seeding at the Section and State Tournament levels should take place with coaches in a face-to-face meeting and should follow the procedures below:
Seeding Procedure
- A meeting will be scheduled for all of the head coaches of the teams in the tournament. Section Directors will schedule the seeding meeting for the Section Tournament and notify all coaches of the date, time and location of the meeting.
- The Section Director or a designee will facilitate the Section meeting.
- The head coach will represent each team. If the head coach cannot attend an assistant may attend in his/her place. Schools not present at the seeding meeting forfeit their right to seed.
- Each team must bring to the seeding meeting enough copies for all seeding participants for a season summary that includes the date, location and scores of all games played and overall and conference won-loss-tie records up to date.
- Each team representative will have two minutes to give an oral presentation on his/her team before the ranking takes place.
- Each coach will rank teams 1-last. (The coach will not include his/her own team in this ranking.) Coaches should consider Conference record, over-all record, common opponents, head-to-head competition and relative strength of schedule in their ranking of teams.
- Rankings are posted as tabulated for all coaches to see. Coaches may ask each other for ranking rationale.
- Rankings are totaled with the highest and lowest scores thrown out. Lowest total is Number 1 seed, etc.
- The tie-breaking procedure given below will be used if needed:
*If two (2) or more schools are tied in the ranking by the coaches, the following method of breaking ties will be used.
(A) Each team that is tied will have one minute to present its case.
(B) All other coaches re-vote on the tied teams. (Those coaches whose teams are tied do not vote.)
(C) Highest ranked team receives the highest seed; next highest ranking; the next highest seed, etc
- When the above criteria determines the seeding of the tied teams, the seeding of the teams below the tied teams is completed.
