New Coach Information

It's our job as coaches to help promote the game and our teams...

Seven Simple Steps to Better Promotion of High School Soccer

  1. To avoid duplication and cut down confusion at the newspapers, either the home team or the winning team should always call in the game results to the papers. Decide who will do it after the game, and then do it.
  2. Enter your scores on Minnesota Sports Online. (www.minnesotasportsonline.com)
  3. Enter your scores on the MSHSL web site. (See your AD about how to do this.)
  4. Create a preseason press release and send it to your community newspaper and to the major newspapers in your area.
  5. Send story ideas and interesting information to the print media. They may not always be able to use your information, but it never hurts to try.
  6. When talking to members of the media have statistical information available.
  7. When nominating a player for prep athlete of the week it's a good idea to fax additional information after phoning in your nomination.
  8. Be willing to provide a wealth of information, including game photos, to your community papers to help them give you great coverage.
  9. Work with your players on how to talk to the media. Rule #1 is to make sure your interviewee speaks about the importance of his/her teammates. Rule #2 is to stress the importance of team achievement versus individual achievement. It's also a good idea for players to prepare written notes for telephone interviews if they are not experienced in talking to the media.

Top 10 Polls for Boys and Girls Teams in Each Class

  1. Be a contributor to the weekly ranking of the Top 10 Teams in your Class. Cast your vote on our web site (www.mshssca.org/weeklypolls) by 12:00 Noon on each Sunday. You will find the poll form at the Weekly Polls section of the website. The State Coordinators will tabulate the votes from all of the Sections to determine the Top 10 rankings for boys and girls teams in each Class.
  2. This is how the Top 10 rankings are determined. Every coach can and should have their say in the team ranking process.
  3. Do your duty, vote at the MSHSSCA web site and become part of the process.

Player Statistics

  1. Coaches who have field players and goalkeepers who seem to be amassing very strong statistics (goals, assists, GAA or goalkeeper ratings) should report weekly and update player statistics to the appropriate MSHSSCA Statistics Coordinator via our web site (www.mshssca.org/weeklystats). You will find the poll form at the Weekly Stats section of the website.
  2. Please complete the online report form by 12:00 Noon on Sundays to give the Coordinators time to tabulate the data.
  3. Do not submit the data directly to the Coordinators' email addresses.
  4. The Coordinators will compile the information and release it to the media on Sunday evenings.
